Turning work: plastic parts

To produce plastic parts with precise dimensions, it is important to use high-quality raw materials. Otherwise, turning operations can lead to deterioration of the strength of the finished product, which can distort the geometry of the part.

If large amounts of material need to be removed, intermediate annealing may be required after turning operations to remove thermal inaccuracies.

Materials with high moisture absorption, such as nylon, may need to be conditioned before turning. This involves drying the material and then achieving a distributed moisture content. Most plastics have much higher thermal expansion coefficients than metals. Parts with tight tolerances should be manufactured under controlled temperature conditions. Parts intended for use at high or low temperatures must be designed with tolerances that allow for changes in size due to thermal expansion, but when turning parts, these tolerances may be smaller.

Turning operations on CNC machines: process features

For turning processing, it is recommended to use C-2 pure coated carbide plates.

Polished top surfaces will help reduce material accumulation and improve the quality of turning parts.

The cutting edges should have a large angle of inclination and a negative rear front angle to minimize friction when machining parts on lathes.

The rough cut must be performed at a feed rate of 0.015 IPR, and the finishing pass must be performed at a feed rate of 0.005 IPR or less.

For internal pockets, if possible, use end cutters with rounded corners. This will prevent the appearance of sharp internal corners of the finished part, which can potentially be stress concentration zones.
